Dan & Joanne Marcantuono

Meet Dan & Joanne Marcantuono

You never get a second chance to make a great first impression. Fortunately, the beauty, the joy, and the fun that make up a life well-lived at Harrogate came through the minute Dan and Joanne Marcantuono walked through the front doors. “I knew it as soon as I saw it,” said Joanne. “Harrogate immediately felt like home.”

Dan and Joanne were born and raised in Newark, NJ, and grew up just 10 minutes from each other. They met at a church dance, became friends, and later dated while both attending Seton Hall University. After graduation, they both pursued vibrant careers. Joanne was an elementary school teacher and later opened her own nursery school and day care. “I started out with 8 children, and when I was ready to retire I had more than 250 children in my school,” said Joanne. “I loved the relationships I built with the families. It was so rewarding.”

Dan pursued a graduate degree in Hospital Administration and went on to be a hospital CEO for 55 years. “Caring for others, fostering professional dedication in my staff, and navigating the changing landscape of the healthcare system was my passion,” said Dan. “I was very proud of all we accomplished at the three different hospitals I helmed over the years.”

Dan and Joanne loved the shore and moved there when they retired. Their three children and seven grandchildren would come to visit often. Several years ago, when Dan and Joanne each took a small fall in the same month, their children suggested they move to a senior living community where they would have support if they ever needed it. “We toured four different communities,” said Joanne. “Harrogate felt warm, relaxed, and homey. I loved it.”

“With my background in hospital administration, I took the tour with a much more critical eye,” said Dan. “I scanned the corners of a room for dust. I checked the level of wear and tear on equipment. I looked at the employees as we passed them in the hall. Did they look happy? I can honestly say, Harrogate sets the Gold Standard for senior living communities.”

“We moved in May 2022, and have been happy ever since,” said Joanne. “I tell everyone to move here when you’re young, so you can enjoy ALL the wonderful activities.”

Dan and Joanne are very active in the community. “We host the Welcome Dinner for new residents,” said Joanne. “It’s a beautiful surf & turf meal and gives new residents the chance to get to meet each other and ask us any questions they may have. It’s a great evening for all.”

“We’re also part of the Catholic Ministry with Deacon Jack,” said Dan. “I host a service once a month in the Health Center, and Joanne gives communion. It’s very meaningful for us. I also enjoy the Chess Club and the ROMEO Club (Retired Old Men Eating Out). Our annual Cigar Dinner is fantastic. Our first impression of Harrogate turned out to be right — we love it here!”

Dan & Joanne, your enthusiasm and positivity are contagious. We’re so happy you’re here!
