Meet Meet Bill Warfel & Bud Umbaugh, married since 2013, together 60 years
Bill Warfel and Bud Umbaugh strive to make their home feel like a retreat. “We have had several homes,” said Bill. “And while each of them is very different, the one thing they have in common is that they all have this peaceful beauty to them. When your home brings you peace, you can’t help but have a happy life.”
After Bill retired from his career as Vice President of Patient Care Services at Albert Einstein Medical Center and Bud retired from his career as Director of Promotion and Public Relations for seven daily newspapers under the Calkins Media banner, they moved to Sea Oaks in Little Egg Harbor, where they enjoyed the pools, the golf course views, and great friendships with their neighbors. “We lived there for 19 years,” said Bud. “We would also spend time at our condo in Punta Gorda, FL, as well as at our timeshares in Singer Island, FL, and Palm Springs, CA. We had lots of friends and a very active social life, but I was starting to have some issues with my diabetes, and it just seemed prudent to start looking into finding a home that would offer some support if either one of us ever needed it in the future.”
“We considered options in New Jersey, as well as communities in Bucks and Lehigh Counties,” said Bill. “We had a spreadsheet so that we could compare the seven communities we had toured. Our friends in Sea Oaks insisted we add one last community to our search and brought us to Harrogate. At the end of the day, Harrogate provides beautiful living, security and support, and was an excellent value for our investment. We really feel like we have a winner here!”
Bill and Bud moved to Harrogate on January 1, 2025, and it only took a few months before they put Harrogate’s support to the test. “The last two months knocked us for a loop with unexpected health issues,” said Bud. “We were blindsided with hospitalizations and a stay in rehab. The staff at Harrogate were unbelievably supportive. Harrogate’s Dr. Vida is wonderful. There are always nurses in the Wellness Clinic should we need anything, and it’s just a short walk from our apartment. And Bill can do all his PT right here. It couldn’t be easier.”
Bill and Bud are very happy with their Harrogate apartment home. “We have this gorgeous 2 bed/2 bath with a patio,” said Bud. “Our baby grand piano fits like a glove in the living room. As an added plus, we have a garage for our Corvette, and that was important to us. The Harrogate staff and maintenance team are simply the best. The concierge goes out of their way to deliver packages to us. And security is notably present here. They pay attention to the details. It’s very reassuring.”
Bill and Bud may be newcomers, but they are making the most of the social opportunities at Harrogate. “I have a bed in the community garden,” said Bud. “I’m growing cucumbers, eggplant, onions, and tomatoes. The activities are top notch, and the range is phenomenal. We go to the shows and concerts, and everyone is so welcoming. We couldn’t be happier.”
