Mary Kay Mason

Mary Kay’s life has had some ups and downs. “My husband unexpectedly passed 20 years ago, so I downsized and moved to an apartment complex called The Enclave in Lakewood, NJ,” said Mary Kay. “While there, I found purpose working as the Enclave Chorus accompanist for 9 years. In 2017, I downsized again and moved to the Lake Ridge 55+ community in Toms River. I lived there for 7 years and was honored to direct their chorus for 4 years. As I entered my 80’s and pondered my future, I thought I’d just take a look at what Harrogate had to offer. I took a tour and was so impressed with what I saw that I signed a contract just 10 days later. I moved in May 2025 and have been very happy with this community. I was so pleased to be asked to be the Director of the Community Chorus at Harrogate. With 25+ members, we’re all very excited to perform our first concert this December. Everywhere I go I seem to make friends and connections through my love of music, and I couldn’t be more thrilled about that!”

While Mary Kay spends time practicing at the grand piano tucked into her apartment, she also finds time for friends. “I enjoy playing Rummikub and cards in the evenings after dinner,” said Mary Kay. “It means a lot to me to live in a community where it’s easy to socialize.”

Mary Kay values living at Harrogate for so many reasons. “It gives me peace of mind — no worries about home maintenance, no need to cook, no concern about my health care in the future,” said Mary Kay. “I look at Harrogate as the gift I give my daughter. I want to enjoy spending time with her, not ever burden her with my care. Living at Harrogate ensures that.”

Mary Kay has just one piece of advice for those considering a move. “Find a community that gives you purpose,” said Mary Kay. “Picasso once said, ‘The meaning of life is to find your gift, and the purpose of life is to give it away.’ I am so grateful to be able to share the gift of music with the residents at Harrogate.”
