6-ABC: 97-Year-Old Chess Player Creates Club at NJ Retirement Community

LAKEWOOD, New Jersey (WPVI) — A hobby he picked up in the 1940s became 97-year-old Gene Salomon’s lifetime passion.

And while he’s played chess across the globe, he’s now focused on growing the sport at his retirement community in Lakewood, New Jersey.

Salomon was born in Gijón, Spain, and later migrated to Cuba. But he desired to learn the American way of life and business. Upon migrating to the USA, he met his wife of 64 years.

He recalls being part of the Spanish national team as a substitute and also qualifying for the Cuban Olympic team in the 1950s, though was unable to attend.

In his 90s, Salomon became a resident at Harrogate Retirement Community and soon wanted to start a chess club.

He has since brought residents together to learn and play together.

His future goal is to bring young players and seniors together at Harrogate, with the help of the Toms River Chess Club and the Greenbriar Woodlands Chess Club.

He has also become a published author in his time at Harrogate, completing a chronicle of his family history titled, “Sweet Memories: Family, Friends, Chess, and Sugar.”

Why Now Is the Time to Consider a Life Care Community

Written By: Mary-Jo Kinneally, Director of Financial Services

In times of economic uncertainty and unpredictable headlines, it’s only natural to feel hesitant about making big decisions—especially those that impact your future. At Harrogate, we understand that. But we also know that during times like these, making a proactive move can be one of the smartest choices you make.

A Personal Story That Reinforces the Value of Planning Ahead

Before I joined Harrogate as the Director of Financial Services, I spent over 30 years as an auditor specializing in not-for-profit organizations. One of those clients was Harrogate, which is how I came to know and trust the community before ever joining the team. But even before that, I witnessed firsthand just how valuable a Life Care community can bewhen my own parents made the move to one in 2015.

My mother was ready. She didn’t want to worry about snow removal, roof repairs, or home maintenance anymore. My father wasn’t initially enthusiastic, but ultimately agreedknowing it was a smart move for the future. They gave their children a gift: peace of mind. We knew we wouldn’t have to make tough decisions for them down the road.

Then came 2020 and the world turned upside down. As COVID-19 took hold, my sisters and I were juggling work, families, and remote college transitions. But we didn’t have to worry about our parents. Their community kept them safe, supplied, and cared foreven when they both contracted COVID. Because they were already living in a Life Care community, they received care from staff who knew them well and who communicated with our family every step of the way. My father passed in 2021, but he left knowing my mother was safe, supported, and surrounded by friends.

That’s what Life Care is all about: security, predictability, and peace of mind.

The Financial Perspective: Why Harrogate Makes Sense

Harrogate is a not-for-profit organization. That means we reinvest every dollar earned back into the community—not into shareholders’ pockets. It means we prioritize resident care, staffing, services, and long-term financial strength over short-term profit.

Here are a few more reasons why moving now could make financial sense:

  • Home values in Ocean and Monmouth Counties remain strong. If you’re thinking about selling your home, now may be an opportune time.

  • Financial security: All residents go through a financial approval process to ensure peace of mind. And should circumstances change, Harrogate has a Benevolent Fund to assist those who qualify.

  • Tax advantages: A portion of your entrance fee and monthly service fees may qualify as a medical deduction on your tax return. You may also qualify for the ANCHOR (Affordable New Jersey Communities for Homeowners and Renters) rebate, Senior Freeze, and veteran tax credit programs—even as a resident and not a homeowner.

The Value of Life Care

A Harrogate Life Care contract ensures that if you ever need to transition into our health center—temporarily or permanently—you’ll receive care at a significantly reduced cost (about 50% less than private pay rates). Even more valuable is the peace of mind: you’ll know your caregivers, your family won’t have to navigate unfamiliar facilities, and your entire community will be under one roof.

The Bottom Line

No one can predict what the future holds. But by moving to a Life Care community like Harrogate, you’re preparing for the unknown in the best possible way. You’re ensuring that your independence, your health care, and your finances are protected—today and in the years ahead.

If you’re ready to explore a lifestyle that prioritizes security, purpose, and freedom, now is the time to take that step. Let’s talk about what Life Care at Harrogate can do for you.

Ocean County, NJ Ranked as the 7th Most Difficult County for Homebuyers in America – An Opportunity for Seniors

The current housing market presents a unique opportunity for seniors looking to embrace a more worry-free and fulfilling lifestyle. According to a recent NBC News report, Ocean County ranks as the 7th most difficult county in the United States for homebuyers. With home values remaining strong, many older adults are finding that selling their homes now allows them to maximize their equity and invest in a future with greater stability and peace of mind.

At Harrogate, you can leave behind the worries of home maintenance and unpredictable costs while enjoying a vibrant, welcoming community designed for active and independent living. Now is the perfect time to make the move and start enjoying all the benefits that come with it!

Ocean County: A Tough Market for Homebuyers
The NBC News article highlights a significant trend: many regions, especially in high-demand states like New Jersey, are becoming increasingly difficult for potential homeowners. Ocean County has seen a sharp increase in housing prices, contributing to its ranking as one of the toughest markets for homebuyers in the entire country. This not only makes it hard for younger buyers to break into the market but also raises concerns for those looking to downsize.

For seniors, this can be both a blessing and a challenge. With home values at a high, it’s a great time to sell and capitalize on the equity built over the years. However, finding a more affordable, maintenance-free living situation can feel daunting.

According to Gloria Walsh, Harrogate’s Associate Executive Director, “We’re definitely seeing an increase in interest in Harrogate from people throughout Ocean County who are looking to capitalize on the demand in the market.”

Why Harrogate Senior Living Community is the Solution
Harrogate, located on the border of Lakewood and scenic Toms River, offers a welcoming and secure environment where seniors can enjoy their golden years without the stress of rising housing costs. Unlike traditional homeownership, where costs can fluctuate and unexpected repairs can arise, Harrogate provides predictable monthly expenses, which are especially appealing during uncertain times.

By moving to Harrogate, seniors can sell their current homes—likely for a significant profit given the high demand in the Ocean County area—and invest those proceeds into a lifestyle that offers both freedom and peace of mind. Harrogate’s comprehensive services and luxurious amenities ensure that residents have access to everything they need for a comfortable and fulfilling life.

A Life Plan Community Offering a Full Continuum of Care
One of the greatest advantages of choosing Harrogate is the peace of mind that comes with being part of a Life Plan Community. This means that in addition to independent living, Harrogate provides access to on-site healthcare services, including assisted living, skilled nursing, and rehabilitation. Seniors who move to Harrogate can rest assured knowing that if their healthcare needs change over time, they won’t need to relocate to receive the care they require.

This full continuum of care allows residents to age in place, maintaining their sense of community and stability while avoiding the stress of future moves. “In addition to the predictable cost of housing and amenities, we also provide full healthcare services within our community, which enables seniors to take advantage of even further cost savings as their needs evolve,” says Gloria Walsh, who leads Harrogate’s Sales & Marketing teams.

Enjoy Predictable Costs and a Stress-Free Lifestyle
With Harrogate being an all-inclusive independent living community, residents don’t need to worry about unpredictable costs like home maintenance, property taxes, or costly repairs. The community offers a variety of living options tailored to individual needs, with financial certainty that provides long-term peace of mind. Monthly fees at Harrogate cover everything from meals to housekeeping, maintenance, and amenities, so you can focus on what truly matters: enjoying your life and making the most of your retirement years.

By choosing Harrogate, seniors can enjoy all the benefits of a well-maintained home, without the headache of upkeep and ever-increasing costs. With a supportive, like-minded community of peers, enriching activities, and 24/7 staff support, Harrogate is a place where residents can thrive and focus on what they love—while leaving behind the stress of the fluctuating housing market.

Take Advantage of Today’s Market
For seniors in Ocean County, now is the time to act. With the housing market as challenging as it is for homebuyers, the opportunity to sell your home at a high value and invest in a community like Harrogate has never been better. Say goodbye to rising home prices, unpredictable costs, and maintenance headaches, and say hello to the comfort and predictability that Harrogate provides.

This bed is flourishing with spring vegetables like lettuce, spinach, leeks, beets, and cauliflower. Harrogate Retirement Community is dedicated to ensuring that this transition isn’t just rewarding, but also stress-free. The Art of Rightsizing

Rightsizing isn’t just about letting go—it’s about celebrating the things you choose to keep. Here’s how you can master this art:

  1. Prioritize Your Belongings: Decluttering is the heart of downsizing. Carefully select and prioritize items that hold genuine value or function. This deliberate act not only ensures efficient space utilization but also fosters a deeper connection with your surroundings.
  2. Embrace an Organized Lifestyle: A smaller space shines best when it’s tidy. Make organization a daily habit, ensuring every item has its designated place. This disciplined approach fosters a serene environment that can significantly uplift your mood and mental well-being.
  3. Create Designated Zones: Even within compact spaces, demarcate distinct zones for activities like sleeping, dining, or unwinding. This visual segmentation imparts a structured and functional feel to the apartment.
  4. Optimize Storage Options: Space constraints challenge creativity. Embrace vertical storage with wall-mounted units or shelves, or under-bed storage containers and drawers.
  5. Invest in Multi-functional Furniture: Furniture that multitasks is a boon for smaller spaces. Whether it’s a sofa that extends into a bed for guests or a dining table that moonlights as a work desk, such pieces ensure you don’t compromise on comfort.

  2. Easier Mobility: Smaller spaces mean shorter distances between rooms. This is especially beneficial for those with mobility challenges, as it simplifies navigation and daily tasks.
  3. Social Interaction: While a 1-bedroom apartment provides personal space, its compact nature may inspire residents to frequent community areas. This means more opportunities for social interactions and deepening ties within the Harrogate community.
